Coldshower Wines...Wines from Colchagua...

All our wines come from Chile's Colchagua Valley, but we have a problem...Neither Pais nor Cinsault have Denominacion de Origen in this valley, which means we can tell you the grape variety but we can't tell you on the label that it comes from Colchagua. Bureaucrazy (yes, that's on purpose), eh?!

So we came up with a name that sounds very much like Colchagua...Coldshower!

We have three wines available, exclusively imported by Craveiro Wines and currently only available to the lucky folks in Colorado. But don't fret, we plan on conquering the world so will (hopefully) be with you at some point soon! Click the More Info button below the bottles to learn more about each one!

labels

We make serious wines with crazy labels, inspired by vintage postcards and movie posters. The names of the wines continue the play on word, tongue in cheek project name and riff on film titles in one way or another!

HISTORY

Coldshower Wines was created back in 2019 when we found an ancient, 150 year old Pais (Mission) vineyard in the Colchagua Valley and immediately knew that we just had to make wine from these historic grapes. We soon learned that due to some ridiculous Chilean bureaucracy we are not allowed to say that the grapes come from the Colchagua Valley. Sitting around, drinking a glass of wine with our good friend...well let's just call him W and say that he can neither confirm nor deny that he's out there keeping America safe...we decided to make the wine together and come up with a silly name for it, a bit of a side project to Matt's personal La Despensa brand. We first came up with Coldshower for Colchagua and later that evening realised that Pais is also known as Mission in the US...

So...Pais...Mission...Pais...Mission...Mission...Pais...

Mission: ImPAISsible!!!

Silly name confirmed! That year we made a bunch of different wines with ridiculous labels, but it was Mission:Impaissible that really stuck.

But as mentioned, Pais wasn't the only wine we produced that year. We also made some Cabernet Sauvignon from a totally marginal site way up in the foothills of the Andes Mountains. This is a vineyard for the adventurous, a vineyard for brave winemakers who want to do something different and make something special. A totally different take on Chilean Cab Sav, a wine that is fresh and elegant but will age gracefully for years to come. Our label is inspired by Tambo, one of our dogs and far and away the most intrepid. Nothing scares him, nothing phases him. He's always ready to take on life's challenges.

And then in 2021 we decided to make Cinsault from one of only 2 or 3 Cinsault vineyards in the Colchagua Valley. 99.9% of Chilean Cinsault comes from way down south in the Itata Valley, old vines from the 50s and 60s. But there is no old vine Cinsault in Colchagua, the tiny amount that exists is all recently planted. No Place For Old Cinsault (yes, we also love the Coen Brothers).

All our grapes come from the Colchagua Valley. We won't make wine from anywhere else...and why would we? Colchagua is the best wine valley in Chile! Grapes come from Matt's vineyard, the Pais vineyard that Matt manages or from the Cab Sav vineyard that's owned by another Englishman up in the foothill of the mighty Andes.

Matt & W

Matt (pictured with a random family member ruining the photo) is an Englishman who somehow ended up in Chile making wine. Don't ask why or how...not even he really knows the answer to that. But here he is, making wine, farming his vineyards and generally living the dream (if the dream is 6am starts, 10pm finishes, financial ruin and a ridiculous amount of stress! But hey, we make wine as well so it's not all bad ).

W is...well the less said about W the better (or we'll probably have to kill you). He's out there somewhere keeping you all safe, that's about as much as we can tell you. He lets Matt get on with the winemaking side of things and helps out whenever he can make it back to Chile (he also sends money, which is always helpful). That's not a picture of W, by the way- W is significantly more hairy.
